Movie Analysis

For the movie I decided to analyze, I picked the Lego Batman Movie. Since it was an animated movie, there were many creative uses of different camera shots and angles. The movie used most of these different angles and shots lots of times to develop many feeling towards characters and settings. Here I will talk about 6 different angles that I thought conveyed emotion well and helped to build on the characters as well as the world they live in.

31:11- Wide Shot

This is a wide shot and a two shot, comprised of Batman and the Joker talking while standing in a chaotic scene. The handcuffs on Joker are from him submitting himself to Batman, willingly getting arrested. Although its early on it is a turning point for the movie, as the Joker turns the prison into a base of operations setting all of Batman’s past villains onto Gotham. This is the main conflict of the movie. The way this shot is made shows the 2 subjects isolated, showing them as the main characters. I think the way that they are so close to each other, considering they are enemies shows how unserious the movie. Afterall it is a comedy not meant to be taken seriously.

40:04- Close Up Shot

This shot of Robin shows an emotion of wonder while looking at a bunch of suits he can have for his superhero persona. His big eyes show that he is a child full of wonder and innocence. This shot made me feel similar to him, as he experiencing joy that only a child can experience. It also adds to the fact that he looks up to Batman and admires him as a father figure. This is one of many lighthearted moments in the film, adding the comedic, family friendly elements.

1:03:34- Master Shot

This shot is a massive master shot that encapsulates all the chaos that Joker has set free upon Gotham. This being that he has freed all the villains in Gotham City Jail and allowed them to wreak havoc on the city. This adds to the story as it is the main conflict and climax, taking up the rest of the run time to solve. It results in a heroic team up, uniting opposing characters to come together to put down the threat.

Aerial Shot- 1:04:50

This shot displays an orange cityscape, so you know that it is sunset or sunrise. It is a very good-looking shot, despite the fact that it is animated with Legos and CGI. One of two seconds earlier in the shot, a plane flies through with Batman and the rest of the cast flying back to the Batcave. It allows for a moment of respite after all the chaos that has ensued, and also gives the characters to think of a plan of attack. This shot made me feel calm, as warm colors create a sense of comfort.

1:20:20- Over the Shoulder Shot

This shot is of Batman talking to an omniscient character in the “Phantom Zone”. They are making a deal that the floating talking Lego brick will help Batman in his goal to send all the villains to the phantom zone. This shot creates a sense of futility for Batman, as he is blurry in the shot. He is not the main focus.
